PROJECT OVERVIEW

Major Projects Group (CMA Corp) was engaged in December 2006 for the demolition of the Wagga Wagga Rail Underbridge.

The bridge was located over the Murrubmidgee River at Wagga Wagga, NSW.

SCOPE OF WORK

The works onsite included the dismantling of the Wagga Wagga Rail Underbridge, including the demolition of caissons situated in the river.

UNIQUE CHALLENGES

 Time constraints;

 Working over water; and

 Use of explosives.

CUSTOMIZED SOLUTIONS

Demolition took place over a fixed period from 5am on Saturday 30 December 2006, with the bridge and caissons removed by 5am on Sunday 31 2006, to accommodate the placement of concrete girders.

Residual material remaining in the river was removed by excavator on a barge and put into a bin for disposal. With the bridge segments removed from their original location and stored in a lay down area, the processing and removal of the bridge sections for recycling were carried out after demolition activities over a three week period with a small crew.

This work was accomplished with a team of 17, working around the clock to complete within the time constraints of the contract.

The demolition works were completed by oxy cutting and a 50T Crane; removing the bridge in sections. Explosives were used to remove caissons situated in the river.

Caissons were removed with two excavators – a 50 tonne excavator on south side and a 40 tonne excavator on North side respectfully on each river bank equipped with hydraulic hammers and buckets.

RESULTS

The Wagga Wagga Underbridge Demolition Project was completed without incident, within time and budget constraints.
