PROJECT OVERVIEW
Infrabuild engaged Major Projects Group to undertake the demolition of the Galvanising Line within the P2 Building and of various infrastructures within the East Mill area. The works at the East Mill area also included the removal of asbestos. The works were located at Infrabuild’s Mayfield site in New South Wales.
The works were undertaken in two different stages; the first stage being the demolition of the galvanising line followed by the demolition and asbestos removal works at the East Mill area, which were conducted a few months after completion of the first stage.
SCOPE OF WORK
Stage 1 – Galvanising Line: Demolition of all parts of the P2 Galvanising Line, including Pay-Offs, Take Up Winding Frame, Fluid Bed Furnace, Cleaning Line & Platforms, Acid Tank & Bund, Instrument Room & Electrical Switchroom, Zinc Furnace, Weightbridge, and other parts.
Stage 2 – East Mill: Removal of asbestos-contaminated items within the Electrical Control Cabinets. Demolition of Electrical Cabinets, Platforms, Ladders, Access Stairs/Walkways, Feed Crane Runway, Weightbridge and other parts.

UNIQUE CHALLENGES
CUSTOMIZED SOLUTIONS
Major Projects Group only used a small team of one demolition supervisor, one operator and one oxycutter. Structural elements from the main structure were disconnected from the main structure using oxy cutting. The internal plant was then stripped using the 33t excavator with shear and grabs. For the East Mill asbestos removal works, a small team of asbestos labourers removed the contaminated electrical cabinets and wrapped them in plastic. Labourers then placed the asbestos contaminated materials into a plastic lined skip bin and disposed them off site to a licensed facility.
RESULTS
Major Projects Group completed the works without any incidents. The client conducted an audit of Major Proj-ects Group’s onsite management system and was extremely impressed by the outcome. As a result of our perfor-mance during the first stage of the project, Infrabuild awarded the second stage of the works to Major Projects Group.
“It was refreshing to work with contractors that come prepared for the job. We appreciate your experience in the field of demolition and the way you approached the task. It was an absolute pleasure working with your team.”- Brad A. | Site Contract Operations Team Leader
