PROJECT OVERVIEW

Major Projects Group (Moltoni Adams) was engaged by Xstrata Zinc for the demolition of the No 2 Lead Zinc Fine Crushing Plant Facility to create much needed space for the Zinc-Lead Concentrator Revamp Project. The plant was located south west and adjacent to the existing operating No.2 Lead Zinc Concentrator.

SCOPE OF WORK

The scope included the removal and salvage of the four crushers and associated structures.

CUSTOMIZED SOLUTIONS

The demolition works were completed using a 150t and 100t crane to lift down to ground in a safe and controlled manner, high level structural elements. Cranes and a 120ft boomlift were used to remove the external conveyors, salvage the #4 crusher units, surge bins and high level shutes.

Upon completion of the high level removal works the 160t excavator was used to demolish the remaining low level structures including all miscellaneous plant and equipment.

The demolition and removal of the concrete plinths and above slab foundations were completed using 35t and 48t excavators equipped with hydraulic hammers. All concrete materials were transported to the on site tipping facility supplied by Mount Isa Mines.

The scrap steel from the demolished structure was carted to the laydown area, processed and removed off site.

RESULTS

In excess of 1300 tonne of steel was recovered and processed during the demolition and more than 5000 tonne of concrete and top soil were removed from site.

This project was completed without incident, within time and budget constraints.

Project Testimonial

Their [Moltoni Adams] previous experience on site, combined with the resources associated with the demolition of the Number Four Crushing Plant, ensured a competitive, timely and safe result for Xstrata Zinc.
