PROJECT OVERVIEW
This Major Projects Group project for Mount Isa Xstrata Copper saw the demolition of the FSR plant and associated structures to ground level, as Mount Isa Mines required changes around the copper smelter to enable increased production. The demolition site was located within the Mount Isa Mines mining lease, and adjacent to the operating smelter facilities.
SCOPE OF WORK
In addition to the main demolition, there were sites containing equipment and material outside of the FSR site such as, Slag Ramp, Flue Works Area and RHF matte Vent Duct area. The project scope also included the removal of asbestos from various sub stations, the FSR Control Room, various buildings in the Cottrell Area, the waste heat boiler, precipitator, reverb furnace, chimney and the FSR Structure. Demolition of equipment, concrete and steelworks in the Converter Aisle Building were later included in scope.
UNIQUE CHALLENGES

Proximity to live operating plant.
CUSTOMIZED SOLUTIONS
A team averaging 10 workers completed the demolition and asbestos removal work using 160t and 30t excavators with Shear and Grab attachments, a JCB Telescopic Handler, and a JLG 80HX Boom Lift.
RESULTS
In excess of 14,000 tonnes of ferrous and non-ferrous metal were removed during the demolition.
