PROJECT OVERVIEW
Major Projects Group (CMA Corp) commenced the demolition of the Copper Concentrate Crusher building in October 2006, following the completion of the demolition works of the FSR plant and associated structures.
SCOPE OF WORK
In addition to the main copper crushing building, the scope also included the removal of a control room, ore bins, an overhead crane, stairways, concrete plinths, and the relocation of pipelines.
CUSTOMIZED SOLUTIONS
The demolition site was located north of and adjacent to the existing operating and SAG mills in the copper concentrator facilities. As the site was located within an operational plant every effort was made to ensure that normal operations were not disrupted and all activities were coordinated with Xstrata.
An average of 6 workers on site processed in excess of 3,500 tonnes of metal, including stainless steel and copper. This was achieved using a 160t, 80t and 35t excavator, fitted with shears, grabs and a hammer, a 100t crane and an 86ft and 120ft Boom Lift.
A major safety issue on site was the presence of lead dust which required strict control of all dust generated and also required regularly blood testing to monitor blood lead levels. Testing for levels of arsenic in the blood was also part of the OHS testing regime.
The project also included the removal of asbestos, a friable form containing material (ACM) known as vermiculite.
RESULTS
During the project an excess of 10,000 hours were worked. The Xstrata customer representative was on site for the drops of the major structures and expressed his approval of the professionalism and efficiency displayed by the team.
