PROJECT OVERVIEW

School Infrastructure NSW engaged Major Projects Group (MPG) as the Principal Contractor to undertake the demolition of the Green Square Community Hall and Hydrotherapy buildings as part of City of Sydney’s Green Square Integrated Community Facility and School development project in Zetland, NSW.

SCOPE OF WORK
 Demolition of the Green Square Community Hall;

 Demolition of the approx. 12m high Hydrotherapy Building, including removal of basement and footings;

 Removal of all asbestos within the buidlings and asbestos soils/footings;

 Decommissioning and demolition of the substation;

 Environmental monitoring;

 Installation of temporary construction driveways; and

 Public footpath reinstatement works.

UNIQUE CHALLENGES
 Short mobilisation window due to footpath and road closures;

 Protection of substation while undertaking the demolition of the Hydrotherapy Building. Temporary work design for scaffold crash deck and demolition curtain.

 Various stakeholders; and

 Restricted timeframe to complete the hard demolition works during the school holiday period due to the works being located next to the Goodstart Waranara Early Education Centre

CUSTOMIZED SOLUTIONS

Due to limited and narrow access to the project site, MPG could only mobilise a 13t excavator for the demolition of the Green Square Community Hall. MPG demolished the Community Hall over a weekend, so that it could create a new site access for the mobilisation of other plant and equipment. MPG then removed all asbestos containing material in the Hydrotherapy Building and undertook all the strip out works prior to the hard demolition of the building.

MPG used two 30t excavators for the 12m high Hydrotherapy building. The nearby substation had to be protected during the demolition of the Hydrotherapy building, as the decommissioning and demolition of it could only be performed at a later date. MPG used an egineered scaffolding design and demolition curtain (as shown in picture 4) to prevent debris from the demolition process damaging the live substation. Once MPG demolished the Hydrotherapy building, it also removed the building’s basement and footings. Additionally, MPG undertook a ground scan to enable the future school ground work design.

Finally, once Ausgrid decommissioned the substation, MPG demolished the substation, and the company also undertook some permanent street reinstatement works at Portman Street.

RESULTS

MPG recorded over 6,000 man-hours for the whole duration of the project without any health & safety incidents. The overall recycling rate for this project was 97%. The project was completed on time and the site was left levelled and clean.
