PROJECT OVERVIEW

In August 2006 Major Projects Group (CMA Corp) undertook this 12 week project to remove asbestos cement roof cladding from the Road Receival Building in Graincorp’s Geelong Export Terminal.

The original track shed was built in 1936 and was extended around 1965. The roof structure comprised bolted and riveted steel-framed trusses with asbestos cement sheet corrugated cladding.

SCOPE OF WORK

As well as the roof removal, the project scope also included the removal of gutters, down pipes, and associated lead flashings and cappings; and the supply and installation of Colorbond and polycarbonate roof sheeting. A variation was generated during the project to cover for the replacement of windows on parts of the structure. The contract also included the cleaning of some structural steel to removal dust and grime, and the repair and replacement of structural steel trusses and purlins.

CUSTOMIZED SOLUTIONS

Workforce numbers peaked at 13, including the asbestos removal team and a team of roof cladding subcontractors. These teams worked through the weekends to complete the job within the required timeframe. The Graincorp site remained operational thoughout the project and no disruption was experienced due to the re-roofing work.

RESULTS

There were no lost-time injuries on the project.
